While wood burning fireplaces were a great item in their time they don't hold up to the efficiency that a gas fireplace can offer. Direct vents are nice, but remember that there will be a solid piece of glass that cannot be removed. Because a gas fireplace doesn't operate on electricity gas burns at a reduced cost compared to a standard home heater.
